ChatGPT vs Custom Agents

ChatGPT vs Custom Agents

It's 2023. Samsung's engineers think they're clever.

They copy-paste business-critical source code into ChatGPT to fix bugs.

Three weeks later, their intellectual property was out in the open.

And here's the hard reality: while you're reading this, your colleagues are probably using ChatGPT.

With customer data. With trade secrets. With competitive advantage.

But there's good news too. Because in 2025, ChatGPT is no longer the wild west. There are now servers in the EU, enterprise contracts with DPAs, and your data is no longer simply used for training. Much safer.

Yet that's not enough. Because security is only one side of the story.

TL;DR

  • In 2023, ChatGPT was a security drama (Samsung, Apple, JPMorgan banned it)
  • Today there are EU servers and enterprise contracts → safer, but generic
  • Custom AI Agents are cheaper and deliver real ROI within 3-12 months

From "safe" to "valuable"

A compliance officer recently told me:

"Olaf, we're finally reassured. ChatGPT now has EU servers and enterprise guarantees. But… what do we do with it? We see no measurable results."

And that's exactly the crux.

ChatGPT is now safe enough for professional use. But safe doesn't automatically mean valuable.

The cost comparison nobody makes

Many companies blindly take a license:

  • ChatGPT Pro: €25/user/month
  • Microsoft Copilot: €30/user/month

Do the math: a team of 100 employees = €30,000 per year.

And still no guarantee it's used daily.

What we see: 80% of employees use generative AI at most a few times per month. For them, such a license is money thrown away.

A custom AI Agent works differently. You pay per use. If someone uses it only 10 times a month, that costs less than 1 euro.

Your total costs are on average much lower.

Case: €80k savings with a custom agent

A production company (450 employees) was already using ChatGPT.

Lots of enthusiasm, but zero control. No CRM integration. No data governance.

We built a custom AI Agent in 8 sprints. Cost? €20,800

  • 70% of tickets automated
  • Response time: 4 hours → 3 minutes
  • Customer satisfaction: 7.2 → 8.4
  • Annual savings: €80,000

No Copilot subscription can compete with that.

ChatGPT vs Custom Agents

ChatGPT / Copilot

Per user / per month

  • Safer since 2024
  • Generic, zero integration
  • Expensive with low adoption

Custom AI Agents

One-time fee + AI Success license

  • Data stays in EU, fully compliant
  • Pay per use → much cheaper
  • Connected to your CRM/ERP
  • Company-specific knowledge and tone of voice

The difference? ChatGPT is a tool. Custom Agents are an asset.

Conclusion: safe is not enough

ChatGPT is safer today than ever. But being safe is not the same as building competitive advantage.

The real win is in custom AI Agents: scalable, compliant, and smartly embedded in your business processes.

My opinion? In 2 years we'll laugh at €30 Copilot licenses. Just like we now laugh at expensive SMS bundles.

The question isn't whether you'll switch. The question is whether you'll do it before your competitor does.

What do you think? Is "safe enough" sufficient reason to keep using CoPilot/Gemini/ChatGPT (Enterprise), or would you rather go for a custom AI Agent that pays for itself?
