01 / What it is

What does AI do in manufacturing?

The AI we build for manufacturing doesn't do the work at the machine, but the work around it: reading requests and drawings, preparing cost estimates, checking order confirmations, proposing schedules, writing quality reports and making the knowledge of experienced colleagues searchable. The work preparation engineer, estimator and planner decide. AI does the searching and typing.

Industry is still cautious about this. According to the AI monitor of Statistics Netherlands (CBS), 18 percent of industrial companies with ten or more people employed used one or more AI applications in 2024, against almost 23 percent of all companies of that size. That's not a lack of opportunities, but a lack of time: if you have to get orders out the door every day, there's no room to experiment.

At the same time, the pressure is high. At the end of the third quarter of 2025, the Dutch Employee Insurance Agency (UWV) counted 3.5 times as many vacancies for industrial occupations as people who had been on unemployment benefit for six months or less. You can't easily replace the experienced estimator who is retiring. You can capture their knowledge.

  • 01Work preparation

Drawings and bills of materials read, operations and materials proposed.

  • 02Estimating and quotes

A first cost estimate based on similar orders and current prices.

  • 03Purchasing and planning

Order confirmations checked, a planning proposal explaining where it gets tight.

  • 04Quality and knowledge

Deviation reports drawn up, and the expert's knowledge made searchable.

02 / Sound familiar?

The factory is running. The office is falling behind.

In most manufacturing companies, the bottleneck isn't the machines, but the office before and after them. That's where people read, search and retype.

  1. The estimator

“Henk knows what something like that costs. Henk retires in two years.”

  2. Requests

“Every request is a different PDF, a different drawing, a different format.”

  3. Order confirmations

“Whether the supplier confirms the right price and lead time, nobody really checks.”

  4. The schedule

“The planner's Excel file. Nobody else understands it.”

  5. Deviation reports

“After a complaint, the report takes more time than solving the problem.”

  6. Searching

“Have we made this part before? Probably. But under which number?”

03 / What we automate

Which manufacturing processes does AI take over?

These are the processes around production where it makes most sense to start. In each one the input is digital (PDF, email, drawing, ERP), the volume is large enough and the outcome can be checked by someone who knows the trade.

  • Inside sales

    Requests and orders

Requests and orders by email or portal read, checked and entered into the ERP as drafts.

  • Estimating

    Cost estimates and quotes

A first cost estimate based on similar orders, material prices and machine rates. The estimator decides.

  • Work preparation

    Work preparation

Drawing and bill of materials read, sequence of operations and material proposed, work order as a draft.

  • Purchasing

    Purchase orders and confirmations

Supplier order confirmations checked against the purchase order: price, quantity, lead time. Deviations go to the buyer.

  • Planning

    Planning proposal

Orders, capacity, material and absence side by side. A proposal with an explanation; the planner adjusts.

  • Quality

    Quality reports

Deviations, complaints and measurements turned into a report in your format, with the causes that keep coming back.

  • Knowledge retention

    Knowledge of craftspeople

The knowledge of experienced colleagues captured and searchable for new work preparation engineers and estimators.

  • Service

    Customer questions and lead times

Where is my order? The reply is ready with the current status from the ERP.

04 / Before and after

What a factory office looks like, before and after.

Examples of how it can work in a manufacturing company. The time saved is an indication or a worked example, not a client figure. What it delivers for you, we calculate with your own numbers.

  • Worked example: costs € 57,600 a year now

    Estimating a new request

    Before

Studying the drawing, finding old orders, requesting prices, calculating. Forty minutes, sometimes with two people.

    With AI

A draft cost estimate based on similar orders, with points to watch. The estimator checks and decides.

  • Indication: 5 to 10 min per order

    An order by email

    Before

Opening the PDF, retyping item numbers and quantities into the ERP.

    With AI

In the ERP as a draft order, with deviating prices and unknown items set apart.

  • Indication: 4 to 8 hours a week

    A supplier's order confirmation

    Before

Gets filed. Whether it's correct only becomes clear when the material arrives late.

    With AI

Checked against the purchase order straight away. If something deviates, the buyer gets a heads-up.

  • Indication: 4 to 8 hours a week

    The weekly schedule

    Before

An afternoon of puzzling in Excel. If the planner is ill, everything stops.

    With AI

A planning proposal explaining where it gets tight. The planner adjusts and publishes.

  • Indication: 1 to 2 hours per report

A deviation report after a complaint

    Before

Pulling data from three systems and writing a report the customer accepts.

    With AI

A draft in your format, with the data attached and the causes that occur more often. Quality adds to it and signs.

  • Indication: 10 to 20 min per question

A question for the experienced colleague

    Before

Walking over to Henk. Henk is on the shop floor. Or on holiday.

    With AI

The knowledge base assistant answers from captured knowledge and past orders, with the source. When in doubt, still Henk.

06 / Knowledge retention

How do you capture the knowledge of experienced craftspeople with AI?

By capturing their knowledge where it already is: in past orders, cost estimates, drawings, deviation reports and in their heads. AI makes that searchable and usable for the colleague who takes over the work. The expert remains the source, the assistant becomes the memory.

In practice it works like this. We collect the documents that already exist and interview the experienced colleagues about how they decide: why this operation first, why this margin on this material, what to watch out for with this customer. Together with hundreds of past orders, that becomes the basis for an assistant that answers questions and prepares a cost estimate the way Henk would.

The nice thing is that Henk is often enthusiastic about it himself. He no longer has to answer the same question ten times a day, and his craftsmanship stays in the company after he leaves.

What you need

  • Past orders and cost estimates, preferably going back a few years
  • Drawings and bills of materials in a place where you can find them
  • A few hours from the experienced colleagues, spread over a few weeks
  • Someone who checks the assistant's answers in the first months
  • 01From past orders

What's similar, what did it cost then, what went wrong?

  • 02From the expert's head

Interviews about how and why they decide.

  • 03With sources

Every answer refers to the order, drawing or report it comes from.

  • 04Role: AI assists

The assistant prepares, the work preparation engineer or estimator decides.

07 / Integrations

Which manufacturing systems do we connect to?

We build on the ERP and the files you already have, usually with n8n in between and custom work where needed. No new system, no migration.

Does your ERP run on its own server or on a package that isn't listed here? We can connect to almost anything that has an API, database access or an export.

08 / Honest

What we don't do in the factory.

AI on the shop floor itself, such as cameras that inspect products or sensors that predict when a machine will break down, is a field of its own. It requires sensor data, hardware and specialists in that technology. There are good companies for that, and we're not one of them.

We focus on the work around production: everything to do with reading, calculating, planning, checking and writing. In most manufacturing companies there's more to gain there than you'd think, because it doesn't happen on the floor and so doesn't show up in the OEE figures.

And if it turns out that a standard package solves your problem, for example a planning module your ERP already has but nobody uses, we'll say so. That's faster and cheaper than building.

  • 01We do

  • 02We don't

Machine control, vision systems on the line, predictive maintenance on sensor data.

  • 03Always

The expert decides. AI prepares, checks and flags.

09 / Arranged in advance

Drawings, data and ownership.

For a manufacturer, customer drawings and cost estimates are often highly confidential. That's why the agreements are in place before we build.

  • Drawings stay confidential

Processed in a shielded environment with business AI services. Which data goes where is agreed in advance.

  • Data stays in the EU

On your own server or on our servers with a European provider. Working methods in line with ISO 27001.

  • The expert decides

A cost estimate or schedule never goes out unseen. AI prepares, the human signs off.

  • No lock-in

Code, data and documentation are yours, and you can take them with you within 30 days.

11 / Questions

Frequently asked questions about AI in manufacturing.

What can AI do in a manufacturing company?

AI takes over the office work around production: reading requests and drawings, making draft cost estimates and quotes, checking supplier order confirmations, making planning proposals, drawing up quality reports and making the knowledge of experienced craftspeople searchable. The work preparation engineer, estimator or planner decides.

Can AI make a cost estimate?

AI can prepare a first cost estimate based on the drawing, similar past orders, current material prices and machine rates, with the points to watch attached. The estimator checks and decides. The more past cost estimates are available, the better the first draft.

How do you capture the knowledge of experienced employees with AI?

By combining past orders, cost estimates, drawings and deviation reports with interviews with the experienced colleagues about how they decide. From that, we build an assistant that answers questions and prepares work, always with a reference to the source. The expert remains the source, the assistant becomes the memory.

Which ERP can you connect to?

Exact, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics and AFAS, and almost any other ERP that has an API, database access or an export. We usually build in n8n, with custom work where needed. We read drawings, bills of materials and orders in PDF or email directly.

Do you also do AI on the production floor, such as image recognition or predictive maintenance?

No. Vision systems on the line and predictive maintenance on sensor data require hardware, sensor data and specialists in that technology. We focus on the work around production: estimating, work preparation, purchasing, planning, quality reports and knowledge.

Are our drawings and cost estimates safe?

Yes. Data stays in the EU, on your own server or on our servers with a European provider, and which data goes where is agreed before we build. Azure OpenAI is an option. We work to ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 (certification in preparation). Code, data and documentation remain yours.

What does AI cost for a manufacturer?

You start with the € 6,000 AI Quick Scan. After that, the AI Partnership runs on package S (€ 4,500 per month, 30 hours), M (€ 7,500 per month, 50 hours) or L (€ 12,000 per month, 80 hours), for a minimum of twelve months. We only start if the business case shows the partnership earning back at least twice the investment in the first year. All amounts excluding VAT.

How quickly does AI deliver results in manufacturing?

We schedule the Quick Scan within two weeks of approval, and the business case is ready within a week after that. The first process goes live in the first quarter of the partnership. Exactly how fast depends on the connection to the ERP and how easy it is to find past orders and cost estimates.
