Not the Smartest AI Wins. But the One Everyone Can Use.

Global AI Adoption - Digital Divide

While the West talks about better AI, Africa uses it massively thanks to one smart move: free access.

AI is growing globally, but not equally everywhere. According to the latest Microsoft report, one in six people now use generative AI, but the numbers tell a more skewed story than you might think.

In some countries, AI now works on every street corner. It's built into schools, government services, and customer support. While in other regions, people have never opened a chatbot. The digital divide we thought we were closing is actually growing. And it's not because of technology. It's because of accessibility.

This inequality brings surprising players to the forefront. Not the superpowers, but open source models. Not the one with the best benchmark, but the one without a login screen.

TL;DR:

  • AI usage is rising globally, but distributed unequally
  • DeepSeek is growing explosively in Africa thanks to free access
  • Distribution and accessibility prove more decisive than model quality

One World, Two Speeds

Microsoft's AI Economy Institute report shows: globally, AI usage rose to 16.3% by the end of 2025. But the real story is in the distribution.

AI User Share in the Global South and Global North - comparison chart

In the wealthy West, 24.7% of the workforce now uses AI. In the Global South, that remains at 14.1%. That gap is growing. The leaders? UAE (64%), Singapore (60.9%), and Norway (46.4%). Not coincidentally, countries with clear AI strategies.

Remarkably: the US is only in 24th place. Despite the fact that most infrastructure and model development takes place there.

DeepSeek's Surprise Offensive

Then there's DeepSeek. An open-source model from China. Completely free, with a chatbot without a paywall. Strategically launched in regions where other models simply don't go. Think Africa, Iran, Cuba, Russia.

In Africa, usage is 2 to 4 times above the global average. Not because of the technology, but because it's available. No subscription, no barriers.

Huawei is helping. Local networks are set up. DeepSeek is not becoming an alternative, but the standard model.

AI Is Not a Competition for Who's Smartest

We often overestimate the power of model performance. Of course, a more accurate model is better. But only if people can actually use it.

DeepSeek proves that open access, local distribution, and strategic alliances are more powerful than the latest features or papers. The AI competition is not decided on the whiteboard, but on the ground.

Conclusion

The new dividing line in AI is not technical. It's logistical.

Access wins. Distribution wins. And trust wins.

What do you think? Is there too much focus on perfection and too little on reach? Curious about your opinion.

Until next time,
